Under an hour from Miami, one comes to an area of great natural wonder – the Everglades National Park. Here one can explore the native flora and fauna of Florida to your heart’s content – and this includes some impressive specimens of ‘Alligator mississippiensis’ – the alligators that are found in the Everglades.
How you explore the Everglades is up to you and the family -but you will be spoiled for choice. You can take a boat tour, climb aboard an airboat or kayak. You need to make the decision just how up close and personal you want to get with nature – and that includes those toothy Florida natives.
When those in the know are asked what the first step in exploring the everglades should be there’s a name that pops up again and again – Shark Alley. Airboat operators are just a hop skip and a jump away from Miami – and the experience will put you deep into the natural action that makes the everglades such a magical place. Birdwatchers will be fascinated by the long-legged wading birds that prowl the fringes of the swampy waters, while those in search of adrenaline will be exposed to alligators by the ton (the correct name for a group of alligators is a ‘Congregation’ – sounds almost serene). pack the binoculars in order to get the most out of the experience. If you want to explore this part of the Everglades (or any part for that matter) then try to head down during the cooler months of the year – the mosquitos are less of a problem during fall and winter.
However, if you are not into the noise and adrenaline of an airboat excursion then do not despair. there are other options. Try renting a bike and pedaling your way along Shark Alley. Or you can take an even more leisurely approach and walk the trails. It’s a 14-mile round trip, but take it in bite-sized chunks. That may not be the best turn of phrase – the roadside is full to the brim with alligators taking in the sun, you have been warned to stay on the path.
You can also climb aboard the tram out to the observation tower where you will get a fantastic view out over the Everglades.
The Homestead entrance to the Everglades is another favorite with visitors and locals alike. here you can enjoy the fabulous Anhinga Trail boardwalk experience – and also view many, many alligators. There are also a number of short hikes that can be enjoyed. The Nike Missile Base Historic Area is within reach and for students of the Cold War, this historical site is well worth a visit. The area also has a great camping ground. For those of an adventurous spirit taking part in what is called ‘slough slogging’ is an option – but it’s not for the faint of heart. It involves what is called ‘wet hiking’ in the company of a guide. It’s off-trail and you stand the chance of getting REALLY up close and personal with some of the scaly inhabitants of the Everglades.
Whatever way you choose to enjoy the wonderful natural beauty and wildlife of the Everglades a visit will provide memories that will last a lifetime. Put it on your Miami bucket list.
