Do you have to remove old plaster to plaster a pool?
Before replastering a pool, it is often necessary to strip away its old plaster. Removing old plaster provides for a clean and smooth surface which ensures proper adhesion of new plaster, thus increasing its lifespan and adhesion rate. In addition, taking this step allows inspection and repair of any cracks or damage found beneath, such as crack sealants.
Under certain circumstances, when existing plaster is relatively in good condition and free from significant issues like delamination and extensive cracking, “over-plastering” may be a viable solution. Over-plastering involves applying an additional layer of plaster directly over existing one; provided the surface has been properly prepared to facilitate adhesion. Although over-plastering may be cost-effective in certain instances, professional pool contractors should always be consulted prior to choosing this approach for their pool.
