What does pool fungus look like?
Pool fungus, commonly referred to as mold or algae, may take many forms and take on various colors depending on its species. Here are some common traits and visual descriptions of pool fungi:
1. Green Algae: Green algae is one of the most prevalent pool fungi, often creating an unsightly slimy green coating on pool walls, floors and equipment that makes its water appear cloudy or greenish in color.
2. Black Algae: Black algae is another prevalent pool fungus. It often appears in dark spots or patches across pool surfaces and typically features dark black, gray or dark green colors as well as rough textures. Black algae can penetrate deeply into pool surfaces making removal an extremely challenging process.
3. Yellow or Mustard Algae: Yellow or mustard algae is a type of pool fungus, typically seen in shaded areas or those with limited circulation. It appears as yellow-hued spots or patches on pool surfaces and has an oily consistency; although easily brushable off, it often returns if untreated properly.
4. Pink Algae: Pink algae (often known as pink slime) is a bacteria-like organism found in pools that forms slimy layers on walls, steps and other surfaces despite its name. Though commonly reddish or pink in hue, its name does not accurately portray its appearance – instead appearing more reddish or pinkish depending on lighting conditions. Although resistant to traditional chlorine treatments, pink slime may continue growing even after being controlled using alternative measures such as UV lights.
5. White Water Mold (or simply “White Mold”) is a form of fungus commonly found in swimming pools and spas, appearing as white or grayish-white film on surfaces and equipment in the pool or spa, or sometimes even cotton-like threads in the water itself.
Maintaining and regularly cleaning your pool are both key steps towards avoiding pool fungus growth, so if you suspect the presence of pool fungus it would be prudent to consult a pool professional or use appropriate pool-cleaning products as soon as possible to address it effectively.
